William Frederick ''Fred'' Hockaday
William Frederick ''Fred'' Hockaday, 74, of Roanoke Rapids died Wednesday, October 12, 2011, at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
Fred was a native of Halifax County, the son of the late Jerry Obian Hockaday and Nellie Comstock Hockaday. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Rebecca Conner Hockaday. Fred was an active member of First Baptist Church for 40 years and was a member of the choir. He was retired after 38 years of teaching at William R. Davie School. Fred will be remembered as an accomplished artist, seasonal traveler, and as a talented cook.
He is survived by his two daughters, Julie H. Stroup of Greer, SC, and Kelly Hockaday of Raleigh, NC; his son, Barry Hockaday and his wife, Estella, of Cullman, AL; three grandchildren, Amina Bounagui, Alyssa Barbee, and Jade Barbee; his sister, Justine H. Adams of Norwich, NY; his brother, Frank Hockaday of Oregon City, OR; and special cousins, Jean Crutchfield, Lois Reynolds, and Barbara Shaw, all of Roanoke Rapids.
Askew Funeral & Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids is handling the arrangements, where the family will receive friends on Friday, October 14, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 15, at 1:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids with Winslow Carter officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.
